Calin Darabut is a filmmaker from Romania. He discovered his passion for cinema while working as a volunteer for the Romanian Boy Scouts. During that time, he was in charge of the Multimedia department and making short films was one of his duties, but with the purpose of promoting the scouts.

In 2008 he made a short film with three of his friends. The film made 5th place in a film festival and helped to provid the necessary motivation to keep on going. They released their films on YouTube under the name ACSA Productions and soon screened them with audience and competed against other local filmmakers in their hometown. With each new short film, ACSA Productions experimented with something new and finally ended up with 20 short films.

On the side, Calin also worked on his own short films, which he published under the name Fisher Films.

2010 brought the move to Montreal, Canada and also the breakup of ACSA Productions but Calin kept his passion for filmmaking.

In 2011 he became a volunteer at the Concordia University Television in Montreal, where he gained his TV experience and the opportunity to coordinate his own TV show.

Realizing he needed to understand more about filmmaking, Calin decided to study film and TV production at the Trebas Institute of Montreal. There he worked on several student short films and a promising TV pilot called “Chasing Zebras”.

In 2013 Calin had his final experience with the film school, organizing the Trebas Film Festival, were he screened his own student short film. With this screening Calin had worked on every step of filmmaking, from pencil to the silver screen.

Now ambitious to work in his field, Calin took a workshop for cinema electricians held at the Cinepool studios in Montreal, were he got hired as the Head Driver for this studio and rental house till 2015.

The summer of 2013 he was offered to direct an indie feature, which he gladly accepted and used the weekends for film. And also in 2013 he experience the bigger films, by working as a background performer on a few Hollywood features filmed in Montreal.

2014 was the year of the web-series, were he played the role of the 1st Assistant Director. A TV producer discovered the web-series and all of the 8 episodes intended for the Internet aired on TV, with the hope of being picked up. And afterwards he found the time to help out on a short film, in one of the smaller roles.

In 2015, after finalizing the indie feature, Calin moved to Vancouver were he got hired in one of the biggest cinema equipment rental houses as an electrical repair tehnician.

In the beginning of 2016 Calin was working on a short film from the indie scene of Vancouver, organized through the Raindance Networking.

Then in 2017 Calin got to be apart of IATSE, one of the biggest film technician’s unions in North America. There he worked as a lamp operator on weekends, besides his main job in the rental house. And at the end of the year he was a volunteer in the Vancouver indie scene at the Raindance Networking events.

And filmmaking is still not over for Calin who is looking for new projects in sight, now back in his hometown of Arad, Romania.
